Here is the story of my Savage Model 24P who is affectionately named Lorain and who we sometimes refer to as “The Gifle”! (Part gun - part rifle) I bought her about 8 years back and she has become my favorite hunting firearm for all types of hunting. I have made several modifications over the years and it’s hard to know where to start in telling the story of these modifications. When I first bought Lorain she already came with a Williams peep sight installed which turned out to be a blessing. The first thing I did was realize that the 22lr and 20guage had drastically different trajectories which made sighting in difficult. I overcame this by installing two front beads instead of one. I attached a red fiber optic front bead right over the original brass front bead and a piece of green fiber optic on the side of the blade. I use the red bead for the 22lr and the green bead for the 20guage and they are both spot on and I even color coded the indicator arrows for the selector on the hammer to match. I didn’t like where the aperture sat as it made it difficult to reach the hammer so I customized that until it fit flush enough to reach the hammer with ease. I never did like the cheap plastic trigger guard so after the second time it broke I found a metal trigger guard (off of a Remington rifle I think) and custom fit it to good ol’ Lorain. The ejector for the 20guage never worked to my liking so I modified that. I put a neoprene shell holder on her and modified it to hold four 20guage rounds and four 22lr and even had room to put a cheek pad under the holder. I put a hold down strap on the forestock so that I could mount a sling to her. Last but not least, I rounded things out with a Sims slide on recoil pad which actually made the stock length just right for me.
