What you're describing should NOT happen!!! I would check with Savage or a qualified gunsmith before using the gun again. IMHO.

It should not put a hole in the card. Please get it fixed.
Your gun looks exactly like mine except I have a crossbolt safety in the frame that blocks the hammer.
I only cock the gun just before I fire it as in while I am pulling up the gun, I pull the hammer back and maybe select the barrel.
Occasionally that crossbolt gets on safe and gun goes click instead of my expected bang.
In my opinion, a hammer gun does not get carried cocked.
