I recently acquired a Springfield Model 67F Pump Shotgun. I was trying to find the year of manufacture and several threads that I read pointed me to your date code sight. While I know my gun is not a model 24, I thought maybe you could shed some light on a question. My gun does not have a serial #, so I know it was built between 1958 and 1968. According to your date code, the oval should have a number (sometimes two) and a letter in it. Mine, however has a oval on the left side of the barrel in front of the receiver, that is upside down, with what is clearly a SP and no number in it. There is another crudely stamp on top of the barrel that is either a 6 or a 9 in it and what is either a arrowhead or a ace of spades on the lower right side of the barrel in front of the receiver as well. My question is what does the SP mean. 1963 or 1965. I looked it over closely and the S is not a 5. A lot of the stuff I read suggests, as you did, that this code appears on everything Savage made up to 68. I'm curious If you can help.

The oval with SP appears on every old Savage I've ever seen, maybe even some newer ones. It's some kind of manufacturing mark, but it is not the date code that you are looking for. I don't know if the 67 has the same date code or not, I guess you'll just have to keep looking and let us know. The statement that is on the FAQ page of this website says that the date code was "stamped on every double barreled shotgun." We know that they also date stamped the Model 24 and 94 break action guns, but it says nothing about other actions such as pumps. I would say that other actions were made on other assembly lines, possibly in other factories, where stampings very well may have differed.
