MY wife inherited a Savage model 24 series N, 22 Win mag over 20 Ga. 3" mag. It has a light colored stock, possibly birch with a serial number of B2XXXXX. The wife seems to think the gun is old... possibly from the 40's or 50's. Based on it's caliber my guess is it was probably from the 70's or 80's. Any help determining it's age might save a marriage.

I'm no good at exact dating of 24s, but non-walnut wood and serial number means the gun is certainly not 1940s or '50s. Serial numbers became mandatory under federal law passed in 1968; Model 24s didn't have SNs before then -- others, please correct me if I'm wrong. In fact, the Model 24 didn't even exist in the 1940s. The Savage-built combo gun then was a "Stevens model .22/.410." It became the Savage Model 24 in 1950. So your guess is closer than your wife's.
