I just picked up a 24C like I had when I was a kid, but bought it off of pictures and haven't received it yet. The barrels are sealed together for the length of the gun, but it has a metal piece that sticks out in front of the trigger guard and I am not sure what that is for? Can anyone shed some light on this. How many different models of 24C are there and which ones are most desirable? Thanks

the piece sticking out of the front of the trigger guard is your break release , form 1972 to 1980 the break was a tang release,(series P) later Models (circa 1980) they went with a under lever opening in front of the trigger guard,(series S) those are the biggest two changes on the 24C , there was also a 24CS with a Nickel finish that had a Pistol grip stock, I just did a Yahoo search for Savage 24C (under Images) , and can't find any with the Barrels together full length , Are you sure it is a 24C (camp)? is there a trap door in the butt for spare ammo ?
also note: Savage changed something every year on the 24's , some had a block between the barrels , some had a dbl barrel bands with the sight as part of the band , some had ramp type rear sight others had a fold down rear sight , some camp 24C's had a oval door in the butt of the stock for ammo storage , mine has the Key hole type , I have seen many types of trigger guards, pistol caps , white spacers, black frames , case harden , game scene , ect ect . I have a 24 series S with a black frame with a game scene filled in with gold paint , only found one of those when I did my search , More Desirable ? nope , just something they did one year , or maybe a few years ,
