Greetings all from the UK. I finally managed to get a Model 24 and am hoping to gain some information about it.
It's a .22lr over a .410, barrels 24" long. Side button selector, single hammer, opening lever is behind the hammer and can turn either way to open the action. The barrels are joined their entire length, and the insides are in very good condition, both sparkling clean. The action is of case hardened appearance.
The odd(ish) thing is there doesn't appear to be a serial number. Underneath the barrel is stamped the following:-
UM J 21
On the inside of the action, on the left hand side is stamped UM then further along 21.
Sod's Law was fully operational on this purchase. I also have, among others, a Marlin 39A. I had been looking for ages for a Williams sight to fit it. Failing to find one I ended up with a Skinner sight that is very good. Well, guess what was sitting on the Model 24 when it turned up? Yes, a Williams sight meant for the 39A! Two holes had been drilled and tapped into the action to suit. On the first trip to the range I had removed the Williams sight only to find that the original sights were lacking in elevation, although it seemed quite accurate.
Well, ever onwards. Thanks in advance for anyone forthcoming with information, especially with respect to date of manufacture. Thanks also to those who have provided the general information already on this forum.

Your Savage 24 was made before 1968. No serial numbers were required for .22 RF rifles/shotguns before that date. If your 24's rifle barrel is not grooved for a scope than the gun is pre about 1955 and post 1950 (when the Stevens 22-410 became the Savage 24). I have a Stevens 22-410 from about 1949-1950. It has been a very good gun for what shooting I use it for. I have a Williams 5D receiver sight for mine and it makes the gun much more flexible/useful, even, IMHO, than with a scope. Enjoy yours. PS You can get a Williams 5D-24 receiver sight for your Sav. 24 on Ebay for about $30 +- and use your present sight on your Marlin 39 (another very good gun).

I am new at this andassembling may have posted wrong, but really wanted to ask a question. I am having difficulty assembling hammer spring etc. Are there any manuals or guides for this?

macnab - the main spring can be a nightmare to put back into the .22/.410 and other Savage 24 models. I had posted a procedure on how to modify the main spring assembly for easier installation. Go to the following post for the procedure: savage24forum.boards.net/thread/591/disassemble-reassemble-main-spring-older. Hope this will help. If you have any further questions please feel free to ask.

Blaze, thank you so much for your information, it's much appreciated. I have since found out that the Williams sight appears to be the correct one for the Model 24, although I suspect it will be a dual purpose sight for the 39A also. The rifle doesn't have scope rails so it looks like I've got it to within five years, i.e. 1950-55. Thanks again.
P.S. I bought the rifle as a collectors piece, which is to say I paid too much for it. Nevertheless I must really remark again on the quality of the barrel insides, they're like new. I have spotted what might be useable scope mounts, those made for a Benjamin Sheridan. I don't know for sure but they look close enough. I only want to mount a scope long enough to test the accuracy.

See the information on the main page on how to date your Mdl 24. It's possibly newer than 1950; many 22/410 were produced without scope grooves up to and including 1960. And, as already been noted, serial numbers weren't required until 1968.
Some countries require that firearms without a serial number be post-production numbered. I presume UK is not one of them?
