I'm looking to re-tap the scope mount screw holes in my 24-V with the next size up. I purchased one with the scope mount holes stripped. I was wondering if anyone knew what the factory screw size is. Brownells has all the tools and screws, I just need the specs on the size. Thanks

if you're going to re-tap it really doesn't matter what the factory thread was.I usually select a common diameter sizeand matching thread and then its just a matter of selecting the proper drill bit and tap from a cheaper source than brownels. But you need to make sure you use a "bottom"tap because the re-drilled hole is not very deep and you want the threads to go all the way to the bottom of the hole.sometmes if i know i wont have a lot of depth to work with I'll break the drill bit off above the bevel so I only drill a "flat" bottom hole. A # 8 machine screw in a common thread turn is a very good holding choice along with loctite of course! On 2nd thought if you're not accustomed to machine work a tapered tap will be easier to start the tapping process with and then finish with the bottom tap.

I wanted to know the original size because I only want to go one size up. Doing so should allow me to tap, with out having to drill at all. Thanks for the heads up on suggesting the taper to bottom tap. Just FYI, I stopped by the local hardware store and figured out that one size up appears to be a #40? (Still couldn't figure out the original size, they didn't go that small) I know so, because the size 40's i brought home seem as if I could simply use a screw driver and little careful torqueing and let them self tap. I was kind of considering simply forcing them in but on second thought, why gamble. I'm going to order the 8-40 bottom tap with a few weaver oval head screws in 8-40 and play it a little safer. You always have fine suggestions big Kelly. Thanks again.
