I have been told that Savage changed the barrel selector from the side button system to the hammer select in 1964. Yet you have one made in 1962 with the hammer select. How did you determine your gun was made in 1962? If it was made then, when did Savage REALLY change from the side selector to the hammer selector? I don't know and it's a question that I have been given several different answers to over the years. Surely somebody around here knows. My gun is like yours and it has an "S" in the bottom of the receiver just ahead of the trigger guard. According to everything I know, that means it was made in 1965. If your gun was made in 1962, it should have an "N" stamped in the bottom of the receiver either just behind the hinge or ahead of the trigger guard.

I have a '63 24E-DL (letter P inside an oval stamped on the barrel) that has the hammer select. I'll have to look at the markings in the bottom of the receiver.

Sorry about the delay. I finally got my 24E-DL out of the safe. Inside the receiver at the bottom (like in Melton's photo) is 36 LU. On the barrels and assembly lug block on the bottom of the barrels are the oval stamps, each one different: 17P, 1P, 9P and SP. I've always dated the rifle by the P code which is '63. Now I'm not so sure. If I go by the L code inside the receiver it would be a '60. If I go by the U code it would be a '67. According Savage24.com the letter inside the ovals is how you date the rifle and the marking inside the receiver are referred to as assembly stampings. To make matters worse on the bottom of the barrel between the lug and and the fore end attachment point is V, 36 and LU. If V dates the rifle it would be a '68. I've always gone by the oval P stampings which is '63. savage24.com/
