Does anyone use their 222/20 for predator hunting, or any other type of long/longer range shooting? I'm interested in hearing what kind of groups good shooters are getting at 100, and 200, (more?) yards and how long you wait for the barrel to cool between shots to maximize precision. What kind of setup do you have? 4 power scope? 18 power? Anyone try see through mounts to shoot #00 Buck shot at coyotes or Bobcats? I'm not a predator hunter, though I've called coyotes and foxes in for other hunters and simply just because its fun to call them in. I generally disagree with shooting critters that I won't eat and I've never tried to shoot at a predator myself. However, I've been completely compelled to try for a Bobcat in KY for the last several years. It's legal, and I'm wanting too. So I'm going to give it a shot. No pun intended. I've purchased a 6-24X50 to slip on top of my 24 V. I'm heading out in a few weeks. I'm now wondering if I'll get groups at 200 yrds that will make the 6-24 a feasable scope for the firearm?

I'd like to mention that I get great 1.5" - 2" tight groups at 100 yrds with my series B 30-30, as long as I let the barrel cool sufficiently between shots. That's with a 9 power scope shooting off of sand bags.

G'day Mike, all,
I'm constantly amazed how good these fine old combos are. I have a 223/12G 3-9x scope and if I do my part, it will put every 55gn Ballistic tip or Soft point inside an inch at 100m. 40gn VMax are just a bit tighter but about 1-1.5" to the left. Powder is ADI AR2208 tried 25-27.5gn with no difference. 1-14 twist wont stabilze 69gr match as at 25m they keyholed hitting sideways. "My part" includes avoiding the barrel heating up after 5 or so shots without a chance to cool. No problem out hunting. Now I just take two guns to the range and swap regularly. When barrel heated up the shots spread out to 2-3". I'm going to try 200m next time. The other amazing thing is that 12g slugs grouped as a ragged hole at 25 & 50m. Challenge is, the POI at 50m was a full 12" below the 223 requiring a plan. For slugs & shot I have a small red dot mounted on the top of the scope and an under barrel laser for spotlighting. Or I can just place the scope crosshairs slightly above to centre the target in the shot pellets. This is a lot of gadgets, but I'm having fun experimenting. I could just point & shoot but I'm confident I can get the most out of the slugs. It's all trial and error over 3 years. All 24s seem to have a mind of their own, my 22/20g is a whole other story. IMHO start with light 40-45gn projectiles to see what your 24 can group like. Then step up through 50-60 to find what your twist barrel can stabilize. Look for keyholeing. For shot & slug point of impact, Use a large target at 25 then another at 50m. Fire a good 3-5 shot rifle group & follow at the same aim point with 3 slugs & a shot of your choice (BB & or OObuck) for size and location of pattern. Once happy keep both targets as once you sight in with new scope or sight you can put up your 25 & 50m targets, aim at the group to see where the shotgun is pointing even years down the track.
Have Fun & good hunting Tully.
