Hi to all here. Got a question for you. I have a friend that owe's me a gun. He was going to get a Savage 219 30-30 for me that that seems to have fallen through. So I have a couple of other options from him. I can take a Handi 30-30AI, or a Savage 24 in 30-30/20 ga. The Handi is tempting. They are a known item and the 30-30's from them shoot very well. I have one that shoots into an inch at 100 yds and I've heard of many that do almost as well. The AI would be fun to work with also (I already have dies). The 24, while I enjoy the concept of it and I've always like things that were a little different, needs to be an acceptable shooter or I won't be happy. I'd accept a 2 1/2" shooter at 100 yds, but I'd prefer better. If I couldn't get it to shoot at 3", I won't keep it. Sorry, I just expect my guns to shoot at least that well. So guys, who out there has put a scoped 39-30 on paper? I need some feedback here so I can make a decision. Thanks! Clare44man

I can't answer to the 30-30 but I have a .223/20 that shoots about an inch at 100 yds. I see no reason that a 30-30 wouldn't do the same. It usually (I am sure you know this) a matter of finding what ammo is the most consistent with the individual firearm. I load some 30-30 for my Marlin 336 that will shoot a 3 shot clover leaf at 100.

I can get a quarter-sized group at 100yd out of my 24V series B .30-30/20 if I am having a good-shooting day, though it strings them up about an inch vertically if I don't let the barrel cool a little between shots. I don't know if it could do better in the hands of a better shooter or not, but it is the most accurate .30-30 I've had. I have a second hand Bushnell Banner 3-9x muzzleloader scope on it, sighted in an inch high at 100yd. It's a scratched up ugly old thing, but more than accurate enough for my purposes, and makes for a good all-around gun that I don't have to worry too much about keeping pretty. It's heavy though, especially with the scope. And I hear that the 24F is even heavier.
Regardless, if the 24 is in good condition even if you don't like it, you could probably get enough selling it to buy 2 or 3 handi-rifles. These 24s seem to be going for crazy pricetags these days.

Thanks guys for the quick replys! Captcapsize, I know what you mean about tailoring the ammo to the gun; my one inch shooter Handi is with ammo it likes. And Leaf, let me suggest a couple things you might try that the Handi shooters have learned about getting the best accuracy from a 'drop barrel' action. First make sure the barrel latch and shelf are completely dry, no oil. This will help with your vertical stringing. And when shooting at the bench, put the front bag under the hinge rather than under the forearm. Hope that helps you get bragging groups from your 24 but it sounds like you have nothing to be ashamed of from that old gun. And think of those scratches as a badge of honor. She's earned those scratches doing what she was designed to do and has earned them honestly. Clare44man

my 24V series A 30-30/20 gauge likes the hornady lvr 160 gr. bullets loaded with IMR 4895, lee factory crimp, one inch or better at 100 yards. That bullet should give me good 200 yard hunting range.with the right load you might be pleasently suprised with that gun.

I Have Shot many Deer with my O/U Model 24, When it doesn't miss fire. I would recommend this 30-30 to any one. I have been reading all the [posts] on here about possible fixes to my delema. I have a 24v series B with the 30-30/ 20 gauge. have never had an issue with the 20 gauge until recent. the 30-30 miss fires probably 80% of the time, unless I use Hornady's. if I use any other brand it is certain that it will miss fire. now this year the 20 gauge has started to miss fire. I have read about replacing the hammer assembly. but unfortunately can not find one available.. any suggestions? ?
