Here is the first crack at the disassembly procedure, reassembly to follow as time permits, but it is essentially the reverse of the disassembly, or the last part out is the first part in. Any comments or corrections to the following disassembly/reassembly process are welcomed from other members of this forum.
Savage (Stevens) Model 22-410 Combination Rifle Disassembly/Reassembly
This is a simplified disassembly/reassembly set of instructions for the “old style” Stevens Model 22-410 combination gun. This process can be applied in most aspects to other models of the Stevens/Savage combination guns.
Disassembly:Forend Wood Assembly removal; Remove the Forend Wood Assembly by grasping the front of the Forend Wood and pull downward. Remove the Metal Forend Head by unscrewing the two (2) Forend Head Screws. Remove the Forend Spring Housing Assembly from the Forend Wood by unscrewing the two (2) Forend Spring Housing Screws. The Forend Spring Housing Assembly consists of the following components: Forend Spring, Forend Spring Spring, Forend Spring Pin, and Forend Spring Housing.
Barrel removal; To open and then remove the combination 22-410 Barrel from the Receiver/Frame, press the Top Snap to the right and pull downward on the Barrel. Once the Barrel is open, pull backward on the Barrel to release the Barrel Bite from the Hinge Pin housed within the Receiver/Frame.
Front Metal Sight and Rear Sight & Step Removal; Using a non-marring punch remove the Rear Sight and Step from left to right. Unscrew the Front Sight Screw to remove the Front Metal Sight.
Extractor removal; While retaining the Rifle Extractor, unscrew the Rifle Extractor Screw. Slowly release the Rifle Extractor and remove from the Barrel. Using a tweezers or long thin screw remove the Rifle Extractor spring. While retaining the Shotgun Extractor, using a non-marring punch, drive out the Extractor Stop Pin. Slowly release the Shotgun Extractor and remove it from the Barrel. Using a tweezers pull the Extractor Stem from the Barrel. Using a non-marring punch, drive out the Extractor Lever Pin and remove the Extractor Lever. Using a tweezers or long thin screw remove the Extractor Spring and Extractor Lever Spring Plunger.
Buttstock w/Buttplate removal; To remove the Walnut Buttstock, unscrew the two (2) Buttplate Screws. Remove the Butt plate. Using a long large flat head screw driver unscrew the Stock Bolt. Remove the Stock Bolt and Stock Bolt Washer. The Buttstock can now be slid rearward off of the Receiver/Frame.
Receiver/Frame components removal; Remove the Top Snap Screw completely. Using a flat head screw driver loosen and remove the Top Snap by pulling it out of the Top Snap Sleeve. Using a flat head screw driver loosen and remove the Top Snap Sleeve, Top Snap Plunger, and Top Snap Plunger Spring. Using a non-marring punch, drive out the Hammer Pin completely, left to right side of the Receiver/Frame. Using a non-marring punch, drive out the Locking Bolt Pin completely, left to right side of the Receiver/Frame. Remove the Locking Bolt Plunger Assembly which consists of the Locking Bolt Plunger and the Locking Bolt Spring, which is the same as the Top Snap Plunger Spring by pushing on the front end of the Locking Bolt Plunger out of the Locking Bolt Assembly located on the lower right hand side of the Receiver/Frame. With the hammer in its full down position use a flat head screw driver to carefully push the Mainspring Plunger Seat towards and out the left side of the receiver/frame making sure that the Mainspring Assembly consisting of the Mainspring Plunger Seat, Mainspring Washer, Mainspring, and Mainspring Plunger come out of the receiver/frame as a single unit. Remove the Hammer by lifting it up and back out of the receiver/frame. Remove the Locking Bolt Assembly by pulling it back and to the right. Using a thin punch, push the Selector Button Plunger in to release/remove the Selector Button. Using a tweezers you can remove the Selector Button Plunger. The Selector Button Plunger Spring can be removed by using a tweezers or long thin screw. Lastly remove the Selector. Unscrew the Rifle Firing Pin Screw and remove the Rifle Firing Pin. The Rifle Firing Pin Spring can be removed by using a tweezers or long thin screw. Unscrew the Shotgun Firing Pin Screw and remove the Shotgun Firing Pin. Note – there is no Shotgun Firing Pin Spring.
Reassembly: Later – work in progress.
Additional Disassembly/Assembly Information:
The following is a simplified method to reinstall the main spring plunger seat, main spring plunger and main spring as a single assembly back in the gun and will add in the disassembly in the future. With the above components disassembled from the gun perform the following steps;
1. Center punch the main spring plunger seat in the center, half way from either end.
2. Mount the main spring plunger seat in a drill press vise making sure it is perfectly horizontal and level, and at a 90 degree angle to the center line of a 1/16" or smaller drill mounted in the drill's chuck.
3. Make sure that the end of the drill matches up with the center punch mark on the main spring plunger seat.
4. Slide the main spring plunger into the main spring plunger seat so that the end of the plunger and the rounded end of the plunger seat line up. The head of the main spring plunger should be horizontal and level, not vertical as it is when installed in the firearm.
5. Holding the main spring plunger so it does not move and carefully drill through the main spring plunger seat and main spring plunger. These parts should drill fairly easily.
6. Remove both parts from the drill press vise and debur all drilled surfaces, especially the inside surfaces of the main spring plunger seat and the shaft of the main spring plunger.
7. Assemble the main spring plunger seat, main spring, and main spring plunger as if they were to be installed in the firearm.
8. Place the assembly in a vise and compress the main spring until the holes in the main spring plunger seat and main spring plunger line up. This should occur when the end of the main spring plunger is even with the rounded end of the main spring plunger seat.
9. Insert an appropriate sized pin through the holes in both the main spring plunger seat and main spring plunger to secure the assembly.
10. Insert the assembly into the receiver after installing the hammer and trigger. The pin should face out the right hand side of the receiver.
11. Cock the hammer so that the trigger is securely in the full cock notch.
12. Using a needle nose pliers remove the pin and then slowly release the hammer by pulling the trigger. The main spring plunger seat, main spring, and main spring plunger should be installed.
The following steps can be used to remove the main spring plunger seat, main spring plunger and main spring as a single assembly from the gun.
1. Cock the hammer so that the trigger is securely in the full cock notch.
2. Using a needle nose pliers insert the pin into the hole at the end of the main spring plunger.
3. Pull the trigger to release the sear from the hammer’s full cock notch.
4. The main spring plunger seat, main spring, and main spring plunger can now be removed as a complete assembly.
Hopefully the above steps are clear. Sorry I do not have any pictures, but if you have any questions you can contact me via this board.
